Rebel has always been a very special dog to me.  From the day I brought him home as an 8 week old puppy, he’s been my constant companion.  With the exception of his “eating disorder” (see it, eat it quick, before someone tries to take it…) he’s always been fantastic.   I have spent more time laughing and shaking my head at his antics than I have anything else!!

He started his obedience training from day one.  After a rough first two years I changed instructors and started training with Dale Gordon.   She taught us more about dog training than I ever thought possible.   With her help, we spent the next year retraining Rebel.  Since he had just eeked out his AKC/ASCA/CKC, CD’s prior to my changing trainers, we wanted to put his retraining to the test.   We entered a UKC trial and he passed all three trials easily with scores good enough to qualify for the Western Regional Pup Peroni Championship competition to be held nearby that year (1997).   With that, we entered our first big competition.  He came away with a placement of 9th out of 72 novice entries.    The experience was very exciting and made me a die hard fan of competitive obedience from then on.

We moved on to Open immediately and Rebel earned his ASCA and CKC CDX’s in the winter of 1997.  We then finished his AKC and UKC titles during the first months of 1998.  He qualified and showed in two more Pup Peroni championships during his Open career.

I was able to attend the 1999 ASCA Nationals where Rebel won HIT in the ASC of Rogue Valley Pre Show from the Open B class.  If that wasn’t exciting enough he then went on to win HIT at the National Specialty itself!!!   I couldn’t believe that this was the same dog that almost couldn’t pass a Novice run!!!

Rebel made his Utility debut in March of 2000 where he earned his AKC UD.

Shortly after he finished his AKC UD, Rebel suffered from bloat and I almost lost him.  Thankfully, with the wonderful care he received from his Vet, he made a full recovery.  After recuperating from the surgery,  our Veterinarian encouraged me to keep training him as he felt it would help keep Rebel in good physical condition and keep him well muscled.

We returned to the Utility ring in the fall of 2000.   Rebel finished his ASCA UD in January of 2001 with an ASCA Honor Dog distinction.  I decided to continue to show him in ASCA and in July of 2001 he finished his OTCH with HIT and HC!!!!  What a way to finish!!

Rebel had been invited to participate in the ASCA Obedience Finals every year since its inception.  In 2001 we took the trip to Colorado and showed in the finals.  Rebel came away with 2nd place in the Utility division!!

When we got home from Nationals, we finished training for Rebel’s Canadian UD.   In October of 2001 we entered a 2 day, 4 trial show.  Rebel earned his CKC UD in his first three trials!!!

In 2002 we were again invited to participate in the ASCA Obedience Finals (Utility division) in Bakersfield. CA.  I had already decided that this would be Rebels’ last formal competition due to his age, so when he won 1st place it was a bittersweet moment.  I was so extremely proud of his accomplishment on one hand and yet also so incredibly sad that our work together was ending.  He has always loved to work with me and I know that retirement is going to be as hard on him as it will be on me.

I attended the 2004 Nationals in Paso Robles and decided that I would take Rebel and let him have a moment in the spotlight again – for old times sake.  He was entered in Veterans Obedience as well as Parade of Title Holders.   He won the Veterans Obedience, and seemed to have a fun time doing it.  He still really enjoy being the class clown.

He will always remain the most special dog I have ever had!!   I will always feel blessed to have such a loyal and loving companion in Rebel.    He turned 12 years old in 2005 and he’s thankfully still going strong.    Such a great, great dog!!
